This month I began incorporating strategy groups in with my guided reading groups, as needed. I thought it went well adding in a strategy group or two as I saw the need arise with working on decoding unfamiliar/unknown words and mini-summaries after a story page or multiple paragraphs ( stopping to "think" about and review what was read). The students seemed to also enjoy the change in group dynamics, especially when we discussed what strategy groups were, in class.
What's next, Katie? Sounds like the strategy groups are going well so far... What's your follow-up plan or related goals? What reflective questions might you be asking yourself related to this latest implementation? ;)
ReplyDeleteThank you for the questions Kara. While I met with this strategy group, I took some notes and noted if students were meeting, progressing or not progressing towards the goal I had for them, for that lesson/strategy. This helped to also show me if students were ready to move on to another focus on I had for their individual goals or needed further re-teaching.
ReplyDeleteFor reflecting, I asked myself if my purpose/goal for the specific strategy group was met. I can answer this from my own notes and observations (M, P, NP) I also reflect if it was a productive use of time and groups. From both reflections, I felt the lesson was affective.
I agree with the strategy grouping! I have noticed that my kids are much more focused on specific skills and understand the clear pupose of us meeting when I organize the groups based on a strategy. I have noticed that these strategies really improve too when the objective is clear!
ReplyDeleteThat other skills have you used? In strategy grouping?
